15 Most Gorgeous Waterfalls Near Manchester

Visiting a waterfall is a fantastic way to spend your free time. It offers a simple yet captivating experience that can refresh your mind, rejuvenate your senses, and bring you closer to the beauty of nature.

Here in Manchester, there are quite a lot of selections despite being a place that’s not known for its falls. So, here are my top waterfall picks if you’re someone who wants to travel near Manchester to check out these magnificent sights to behold!

Kinder Downfall

Directions

Kinder Downfall is one of the most famous waterfalls in the UK. The best thing about it is its accessibility since it’s just in the Peak District.

You’ll find that this particular waterfall looks fantastic regardless of the season, so you can take Instagram-worthy or Facebook story shots any time you visit! Heck, you can even post your pictures on your group chats to make your friends a bit envious!

Although it looks simply magical during winter, when narrow stalactites hang around its rocky edges— it’s like a winter wonderland.

Pro Tip:

Since Kinder Downfall stands are 30 metres tall, diving is not recommended.

Ingleton Waterfalls

Directions

If you’re looking for safer waterfalls for kid-friendly adventures (kids activities manchester), then Ingleton Waterfall Trail is the best option. This waterfall is worth the visit if you love to sightsee one of the more beautiful bodies of water the UK has to offer.

What makes Ingleton particularly special is it’s more than just a waterfall entry. Instead, you can stroll further and see a recreational park as well as a children’s centre where you can take your kids for a safer adventure.

Ingleton Waterfalls is a very tall waterfall that reaches a height of 169 metres. However, to make it safer for visitors, the waterfall is divided into sections using rocks. Each section has its own separate portion of the falls.

Pro Tip:

Ingleton Waterfalls is a natural treasure, so it’s important to respect the environment. Stay on designated trails, dispose of any litter properly, and avoid damaging or disturbing the plants and wildlife.

Cautley Spout

Directions

Another beauty in Yorkshire is Cautley Spout, and it’s a gorgeous waterfall that’s surrounded by epic mountains and boulders that I reckon you’d love to take pictures of.

It drops around 200 metres from the peak of the Cautley Crags all the way down to the Cautley Holme Beck. Unlike the previous two falls, this one is quite unsafe to traverse through because there are no ledges or large mass of boulders that you can rest on and slowly go down to.

Overall, this is a great UK waterfall to spend time with loved ones as friends. As for children, I’ll have to say to refrain from bringing them here since the pathways are quite steep.

Pro Tip:

While the falls in and of itself look beautiful, I’d say it’s not a great place to stay for longer periods of time. Make this a quick spot and expect to add more destinations to your itinerary when visiting here.

Lodore Falls

Directions

Say you’re not the ‘nature’ type of person, I totally understand that— not everyone is! If that’s so, then Lodore Falls is a great alternative to one of the more risk-heavy falls that are too frightening for those who fear tall heights!

What’s so great about Lodore Falls is it has an exclusive 5-star hotel and spa where all the amenities are available. From expert masseuse to fancy restaurants, there’s plenty to get around when visiting Lodore.

Not to mention, you can also expect a towering and beautiful just right across the spa place if you look beyond the horizon. This one also happens to be one of the louder falls where you hear surreal and natural reverberations as you relax on your vacation!

Pro Tip:

Come here during the winter season because the Lodore Hotel and Spa is at a great discount! It also won’t compromise your experience because the spa itself looks extra fine during the colder season when it’s frozen!

Aira Force

Directions

Some waterfalls everywhere in the world are pretty hard to reach which makes it inaccessible and time-consuming— especially when you’re travelling by foot.

You needn’t worry when visiting Aira Force because the whole place is designed sight-seeing! There are beautiful arching bridges that will take you from spot to spot where you can view the most stunning sceneries of the Aira Falls park.

Unlike most falls on this list, you can bring your pets with you and expect a lot of other visitors to bring some of theirs as well which makes it the most enjoyable family experience for both your critter and little children!

Pro Tip:

Come here during the winter season because the Lodore Hotel and Spa is at a great discount! It also won’t compromise your experience because the spa itself looks extra fine during the colder season when it’s frozen!

High Force

Directions

If you’re a photographer and want to take surreal and unbelievable pictures of nature’s most beautiful places, then the High Force falls is a great place to start.

Where to even begin with this place? If you’re a seasoned or even a rookie photographer, the pathways are incredibly safe (Which is safer Manchester or Liverpool?) and will lead you to an open area where the strong rush falls down the rocky terrains.

Oddly enough, only very few people come to High Force too— probably because of how long the trip is from Manchester. But in my opinion, no place is too far if you can see a sight like what you’re about to when exploring High Force Falls!

Pro Tip:

Yes, it’s not the most touring falls in the UK, but there are times when you can even be completely alone for the perfect photographic session. Visit here during the spring and you’ll see how beautiful High Force falls can really be!

Aysgarth Falls

Directions

At first glance, Aysgarth Falls may not be any special, especially when you’ve come across some of the entries on this list. Nothing really stands out, and the falls aren’t even that high to begin with.

However, what you’ll grow to appreciate when visiting is how accessible and swimming-free it is! Unlike the taller falls and the inaccessible terrains from elsewhere, Aysgarth is extremely open and you can bring a swimsuit or two to go swimming (swim lessons Manchester)!

The area nearby Aysgarth is Yorkshire Dales National Park which has a lot of amenities too! This is why it’s one of the most accessible attractions as far as waterfalls go.

Pro Tip:

Even during the winter, the falls can warm up due to a nearby spring near the village of Aysgarth. So, swimming during the holidays is now an option for you— can you imagine wearing a bikini during the winter here in the UK?

Hardraw Force

Directions

Hardraw Force is usually a pretty popular name as far as waterfalls are concerned, and it’s known  to have the biggest waterfall with a well-known 100-foot drop.

But aside from that, you can explore tons of great sceneries because the height can take you far from the peak of the rocky cliffs that shows you that gallant view of the bustling cities of the UK— including Manchester and many more!

If you want to rest, then you can expect several inns nearby as well! The most notable one, being, the Green Dragon Inn which is well managed independently.

To reach the waterfall, you can now go to the left side of the inn and continue beyond the car park.

Pro Tip:

Make sure to wear comfortable footwear as you’ll be walking on uneven terrain. Don’t forget to bring a raincoat or umbrella, as the waterfall generates a significant amount of mist.

Swallow Falls

Directions

At Swallow Falls, you’ll find a beautiful scene with greenery, rocks, and a stunning waterfall that plunges into the river. But aside from that, you can expect a large and open plain of land where you can park and picnic too!

For solo wanderers or adventurers, this is a great place to unwind because of the vastness of the space.

Additionally, you can explore the nearby walking trails, which offer scenic views and a chance to immerse yourself in nature. Photographers will find plenty of picturesque moments to capture, from the dynamic waterfalls to the serene surroundings.

It’s worth noting that Swallow Falls is a popular tourist destination, so expect some crowds, especially during peak seasons. However, the beauty of the falls and the surrounding landscape make it a worthwhile visit regardless.

Pro Tip:

The terrain around Swallow Falls is uneven, so best wear footwear that gives your stable footing.

Waterfall Ashworth

Directions

One of my personal favourites, Ashworth Waterfall is worth visiting for its natural beauty and serene atmosphere.

As a tourist, you can expect a tranquil setting with a cascading waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. The waterfall provides a refreshing and picturesque sight, offering a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

It’s important to note that Ashworth Waterfall does not have extensive tourist infrastructure or commercial facilities.

Pro Tip:

Be mindful of safety precautions and respect the natural environment during your visit. Some of its rules are extremely strict like loitering in more dangerous spots and throwing garbage in random areas of the falls.

Pistyll Rhaeadr

Directions

Pistyll Rhaeadr boasts stunning natural beauty with its cascading waterfalls and surrounding landscapes.

The sight of the waterfall itself, plunging 240 feet into a deep pool, is truly awe-inspiring and provides an excellent opportunity for photography (photography studio manchester) or simply taking in the scenery.

The area surrounding Pistyll Rhaeadr offers various hiking trails and walking paths. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, you can explore the beautiful countryside and enjoy the outdoor experience.

The trails cater to different fitness levels, ensuring that there’s something suitable for everyone. To me, this is a great place to experience a sense of escapism by spending time here for a vacation with friends and family!

Pro Tip:

This is probably the first fall that I can recommend diving! For non-swimmers, I’d say just enjoy the scenes, but if you love to dive in on the clear waters of thePistyll Rhaeadr, then bring your snorkels and flippers with you then!

Falls of Clyde

Directions

The primary attraction of Falls of Clyde is its waterfalls, which are regarded as some of the most picturesque in the UK!

The main waterfall, known as Bonnington Linn, offers a breathtaking cascade of water surrounded by lush greenery. This natural spectacle provides an ideal setting for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers.

If you’re somehow not convinced, let me remind you that you can expect a whole lot more in its natural wildlife inhabitants!

It’s not everyday you’d get to take pictures of diverse and beautiful wild animals like buzzards, hedgehogs, and otters— so take the opportunity to meet some little critters while you’re out here adventuring with a few locals too!

Pro Tip:

Speaking of locals, there are also country mills nearby where you can find nearby residents where you can have a chat! Ask them about the history of Falls of Clyde! It’s always different to learn about one place’s history from the locals themselves compared to what you’ll read in history books!

Steall Falls

Directions

As the second-highest waterfall in the UK, it offers a visually stunning natural spectacle that attracts tourists from around the world.

For adventure seekers, Steall Falls offers an added thrill. The waterfall is crossed by a wire rope bridge known as the Steall Bridge, which hangs over the gorge below.

Crossing this bridge provides an exhilarating experience and an opportunity for unique photo opportunities.

It’s also worth noting that while the waterfall itself is the main attraction, the entire Glen Nevis area offers additional recreational activities.

Pro Tip:

Hiking enthusiasts can explore the surrounding trails, including the challenging hike up Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. Camping, fishing, and picnicking are also popular activities in the area.

Falls of Bruar

Directions

The Falls of Bruar in the UK are renowned for their captivating beauty and are definitely worth a visit.

As a tourist, you can expect to encounter a series of magnificent waterfalls amidst a picturesque setting. The falls are nestled within the rugged and scenic Bruar Glen, providing a perfect backdrop for outdoor exploration.

There are well-maintained walking trails that lead you through the enchanting woodland, allowing you to witness the falls up close and appreciate the surrounding nature.

As you approach the falls, keep an eye out for the hidden nooks and crannies along the path. These spots offer prime viewing angles and unparalleled photo opportunities.

A camera, or at the very least, a smartphone with a good camera, is an essential companion for any visitor keen on capturing the essence of the Falls of Bruar.

Pro Tip:

To truly appreciate the Falls of Bruar in all their glory, plan your visit during the early morning hours or the late afternoon. Trust me, the interplay of sunlight and shadows on the cascading waters is simply mesmerising during these times.

Grey Mare’s Tail

Directions

Lastly, Grey Mare’s Tail is one of the most captivating falls in the UK to visit because of its rich clear waters that you can drink from the hand itself!

This stunning waterfall plunges down a dramatic cliff face. As you approach the spot, you’ll encounter well-marked hiking trails that lead you through picturesque landscapes.

So, it’s best to be prepared for a scenic hike that will leave you in awe. The Grey Mare’s Tail is nestled within the picturesque Moffat Hills, and reaching its captivating waterfall requires a moderate level of fitness and sturdy footwear.

Pro Tip:

To witness the waterfall at its most impressive, aim to visit after a period of rainfall or during the spring months when the snowmelt swells the cascades. The sheer power and volume of water during these times are bound to leave you spellbound.
