The 5 Best Farm-to-Table Restaurants in Manchester for Fresh and Seasonal Dishes

  • Value for Money - We chose restaurants that could give you the best bang for your bank. That said, we still considered whether they’re pricey or affordable.
  • Service Quality - We selected restaurants that have friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable staff, as well as a speedy service.
  • Offerings - Good restaurants should have a wide variety of dishes to cater to various tastes. We also noted the flavour and presentation of each dish, while considering the sustainable practices behind each one.
  • Atmosphere - We observed the ambiance of the restaurant, which comes from a combination of factors such as decor, lighting, presence of live music, etc. This criteria also takes into account the restaurant’s use of space and cleanliness.

Have you ever taken a bite of something that made you feel like you were in the middle of a serene forest or a breezy seaside? That’s what I felt when I first ate at a farm-to-table restaurant.

I started with a simple salad then had lemon butter cod for my main—they were the freshest I ever had. It’s such a shame that most city restaurants (like many here in Manchester) rely on mass-produced ingredients that have lost much of the flavours of real, seasonal food.

Thankfully, this city has a handful of farm-to-table restaurants we could rely on for the freshest ingredients that are sourced locally. The bonus? Local farmers benefit too! But you already know this, don’t you? Well, we’re such fans of farm-to-table restaurants so our team decided to drop by the best ones in Manchester.

And, to help you find which spots to add to your list, we reviewed each one, keeping in mind various aspects that’ll make your dining experience even more worthwhile. Read on!

If you want to treat your significant other to a nice dinner without spending a fortune, Another Hand just might be the place you’re looking for. This restaurant has a focus on casual, intimate dining.

Now, the place might be small, but the flavours they offer are BIG! We got to try their butter poached cod and its melt-in-your-mouth sensation made me feel like I was in heaven.

Our other favourites include their whole roasted sea bream, braised belly bacon, and lamb belly porchetta.

The staff is also very friendly and can give recommendations based on your dietary restrictions. We also loved how the food comes in quickly, which is great if you’re coming in extra hungry.

Pros

  • Good selection of meat and fish dishes
  • Good service

Cons

  • Small, tight space
  • Chairs aren’t very comfortable

Where the Light Gets In offers something a little different, as they’ll walk you through a 7-course tasting menu rather than have traditional ordering from a menu. We thought we were going to have an issue with this, but our worries were completely washed away after the night—the chef knows best indeed.

The fish was so fresh that it felt like they just took it out of the water. This high level of freshness is a common team with their food, as the folks at Where the Light Gets In work directly with farmers and fishermen so their dishes are as fresh as can be.

We also enjoyed the vibes of the place, as the restaurant has a design that’s a mix of industrial and rustic, making it feel modern and cosy at the same time.

The interior’s not perfect, though. The lighting was a bit warm and harsh, which bothered one of our friends. We understand that it adds to the charm of the place, but just be aware of this if you’re particularly sensitive to this type of stuff.

Pros

  • Cosy establishment
  • Fresh and delicious food

Cons

  • Tasting menu style might not be for everyone
  • Harsh lighting

Higher Ground focuses on dishing out whatever British produce is at its peak at the time, meaning their menu is ever-changing. This is great if you love surprises, but might not be for those who are looking for consistency.

When we visited, the dishes that were on the menu at the time were Beetroot, Cod Roe, and Oysters Rockefeller, and they were all fresh and flavourful. We also appreciate that they even have vegetarian options and creative cocktails!

The spacious and modern design of the restaurant was also very pleasing. It’s nothing new or unique, but the place looks clean and won’t offend anyone.

Sadly, we left the place wanting for more as their serving portions were on the small side. They were also a little pricey—we paid around £110 (for two), and this didn’t even include the drinks yet.

Pros

  • Spacious restaurant
  • Seasonal menu offers good surprises, but

Cons

  • Seasonal dishes might also limit options
  • Pricey

TNQ is a lovely little place with a relaxed vibe. They use the best seasonal ingredients and it’s apparent when you get a taste of their modern dishes.

Even just the starters blew our minds (get the fish croquettes). One of the mains we ordered was the porchetta and we raved about it for weeks! The flavours made us want to go back for more, and so we did!

The second time we went there was on Happy Monday, where they specialised in a 3-course meal with unlimited wine for only £47.5! We once again left full and satisfied!

It is worth noting, however, that some tables are much better than others. When we first went to TNQ, we were seated very close to the noisy kitchen, making conversation difficult.

Pros

  • Decent serving sizes
  • Great starters

Cons

  • Some tables are not awfully positioned
  • Staff could be more accommodating

We went to Groobarbs Field Kitchen on a Friday, and though we came in a big group, we appreciated how everyone was comfortably seated as the place was quite spacious.

They also had a live singer with a beautiful voice (and excellent choice of songs) that made the restaurant’s warm and relaxing atmosphere even lovelier!

As for the food, we had beef as our main dish. While it tasted good, we were disappointed that the cut was on the small side and a lot of it was fat.

We’re also iffy that Groobarbs Field Kitchen wasn’t as warm and welcoming than we’d hoped, possibly because of the somewhat slow service. It was the Friday dinner rush, understandably so, but we hope they can improve on this aspect.

On the bright side, the drink we washed away our food with was divine! We had pinot noir and it had the perfect balance of fruity, oaky flavours, which went perfect with our meal.

Pros

  • Cosy atmosphere
  • Great wine

Cons

  • Food quality could be better
  • Slow service
